Every time we visit Raton and Folsom we make sure to cross Johnson Mesa and stop at St. John's Church. This historical church is a one-of-a-kind in the southwest and stands today as a monument to the people who lived, worked, and played in this incredible environment. At an elevation of 7,500 - 8,000 feet above sea level, this church is often in the clouds. The stark contrast between this single, handmade structure and the treeless mesa view seems to bring the sky even closer. It's a meditative place for prayer and appreciation. Be mindful when you visit and leave it nicer than you found it. The church is still used today and cared for by local volunteers.
